235 Second Street was built by Birmingham Development in 1999. This 285,000 sf building was designed by Fee Munson Ebert and constructed by Swinerton Builders, designed to seamlessly co-exist with the surrounding buildings. The owner flew to Washington State to personally pick the seven different colored bricks used for the exterior façade. John King (Chronicle Urban Design writer) says “this building is a well-crafted building, as elegant as it is intelligent.” And SF Gate titled their review of the building ‘Classy Newcomer.’
Floor plates of 40,000 sf (one acre!) are the main feature, with windows on all four sides. Plentiful parking in the building for bikes and cars, and a first class gym. The central six story staircase is a “must-see.”
The lobby is part of the public open space and the courtyard is home to a stainless steel sculpture by renowned British artist, Anish Kapoor.
